Christopher Nolan bio:
Filmmaking has been a lifelong pursuit for Christopher Nolan, who began making movies at an early age with his fathers Super-8mm camera. While studying English Literature at University College of London, Nolan shot 16mm films at UCLs film society, learning the guerrilla film techniques he would later use to make his first feature, Following. The no-budget noir, which The New Yorkers Bruce Diones hailed as leaner and meaner than the thrillers of Hitchcock, enjoyed great success at international film festivals including Toronto, Rotterdam, Slamdance, and Hong Kong, prior to being released theatrically in the U.S. (Zeitgeist), U.K. (Alliance), France (CCI) and various other territories.
Nolans second film was the low-budget independent feature Memento, starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Ann Moss and Joe Pantoliano, which Nolan directed from his own screenplay, based on a short story by his brother Jonathan. Released by Newmarket Films, Memento brought Nolan numerous honors, including Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay, two Independent Spirit Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and a Directors Guild of America Award nomination. In addition, he won Best Screenplay Awards from several critics groups, including the Los Angeles, London, Chicago and Broadcast Film Critics Associations, as well as the American Film Institutes Screenwriter of the Year Award, and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.
Nolan followed Memento with the critically acclaimed psychological thriller Insomnia for Warner Bros. Pictures, Section 8, and Witt-Thomas Films. Starring Academy Award winners Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank, the film earned Nolan the Best Director of the Year Award from the London Critics Circle.
In 2005, Nolan co-wrote and directed Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman. The blockbuster pleased critics and fans alike, reimagining the Warner Bros. franchise and paving the way for the highly anticipated follow up, The Dark Knight.
Nolans fifth and most recent film, The Prestige, was released by Touchstone and Warner Bros. Pictures. Starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson and Michael Caine, the story depicts an intense rivalry between two magicians who become obsessed with outdoing one another, leading to self-destruction and murder. Empire Magazine named Nolan the Best Director of the Year while the film received Academy Award nominations for its extraordinary art direction and cinematography.
The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Morgan Freeman. The film follows Batman Begins, telling the story of Batmans alliance with Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, who join forces to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. But they soon find themselves prey to a criminal mastermind known as the Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. The Warner Bros. Pictures film will be released on July 18, 2008.
Nolan currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, producer Emma Thomas, and their children.
