Cinema/Chicago, the presenting organization of the annual Chicago International Film Festival, offers on-going (unpaid) internships (minimum 3-months basis) for students and young professionals who are interested to acquire hands on experiences through their internships. Successful performance and completion of internship may lead to paid positions during the fall Festival season.

Development
The Chicago International Film Festival
Unpaid Internship. Flexible hours at least 16 hours a week for Chicago International Film Festival, a nonprofit cultural organization. Start anytime.

Content:
This internship is designed to give real-world experience in both corporate and foundation sponsorship of a nonprofit cultural organization. Intern works directly with Development Director and other Festival staff to assist in securing sponsors and foundation support for The Chicago International Film Festival.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist Director of Development in preparing materials for potential corporate sponsors.
  • Help ensure that all sponsor requirements are met.
  • Help create the most effective presentation of Festival materials and opportunities for potential sponsors.
  • Assist in compiling materials needed for grant applications.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Interest and some coursework in development and/or marketing.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good writing and communication skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work well under a deadline
  • Ability to use Access & Word programs comfortably
  • Foreign language ability desirable

Assistant to Founder/Artistic Director
The Chicago International Film Festival
Unpaid Internship. Flexible hours at least 20-40 hours a week for Chicago International Film Festival, a nonprofit cultural organization. The internship will run from the end of July through the month of October.

Content:
This internship is designed to give interns insight into the workings of an international film festival. Interns will become one of Michael Kutza's assistants, helping him with all aspects required in the staging of the upcoming 43rd Chicago International Film Festival.

Film Programming
The Chicago International Film Festival
Unpaid Internship. Flexible hours at least 16 hours a week for Cinema/Chicago, a nonprofit cultural organization and presenter of The Chicago International Film Festival

Content:
This internship is designed to give intern experience in the feature film programming portion of festival preparation and to provide support for Festival staff. Intern works directly with Festival programmer in preparation for the 44th annual Chicago International Film Festival, October 16-29, 2008.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist Feature Film Programmer with all aspects of Festival programming, including: correspondence with film companies/directors, scheduling, processing festival entries, and distribution of festival regulations.
  • Work on Cinema/Chicago International Connections summer screening program. .
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Interest and some coursework in film history/cinema studies.
  • Ability to work independently

Content:
This internship is designed to give intern experience in graphic design for the Annual Chicago International Film Festival program book and schedule. Intern would work directly with graphic artist and head writer to create a schedule, program book, and event invitations in an exciting festival environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist graphic artist and head writer with creation of festival materials. including: schedule, program book, invitations, and speeches.
  • Work with festival staff to create best visual representation of the Festival.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Quark Xpress experience.

Arts Administration
The Chicago International Film Festival
Unpaid Internship. Flexible hours at least 20 hours a week for Cinema/Chicago's year-round educational/membership programs and during the Chicago International Film Festival. Start anytime.

Content:
This internship is designed to give intern experience working with Film Festival staff to put on the annual Chicago International Film Festival and to provide support for Festival staff. During off-Festival period, the intern will experience the administration and management aspects of the other cultural and educational programs that Cinema/Chicago presents.

Responsibilities:
  • Help with our Membership Program; member mailings, film screenings, maintain database.
  • Assist the Programming Department; correspondence to film companies/directors, processing festival entries and distribution of Festival regulations.
  • Assist with the coordination of TV Fest and Intercom competitions.
  • Provide support for Development and Marketing staff; compiling material needed for foundation grants, creating effective presentations of Festival materials for potential sponsors
  • Help the Outreach Program with year-round activities for the deaf communities and high school students.
  • Work with Festival staff to prepare for and present the Chicago International Film Festival.

Event Management
Cinema/Chicago
Unpaid Internship. Flexible hours at least 20 hours a week, minimum 3 months duration for Cinema/Chicago, a nonprofit cultural organization. Start anytime.

Content:
This internship is designed to give intern experience in event management for all the special events staged by Cinema/Chicago on a year round basis. Intern would work directly with event managers to organize and produce the various events, namely; Oscar Party in February; HUGO AWARDS event honoring the Best in Television for the Chicago International Television Competition in May; INTERCOM, The Film & Video Competition winners presentation in July; SUMMER GALA (annual black-tie charity event with proceeds benefiting the Chicago International Film Festival) in June; the International Summer Screenings Program (June 4 - September 10) and any other special events/presentations/panels during the 44th Chicago International Film Festival, October 16-29, 2008.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist the different events managers or programmers in coordinating all aspects of each different event from putting together the budget, to creating the time line, to liaisoning with special committees, to mailing out of any promotional materials or invitations, to acquiring adequate equipment, coordinating guest lists, to finally producing the event and providing actual event on site support.
  • Since most of the events staged by Cinema/Chicago are mainly fund-raisers, it is also the responsibility for the event manager to ensure that the events are economically well performed. The interns are required to assist in achieving this aspect too.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Must have coursework and/or event planning experience.

Marketing/Publicity
The Chicago International Film Festival

Content:
This internship is designed to give real-world experience in both marketing and promotion of a nonprofit cultural organization. Intern works directly with Cinema/Chicago's Marketing Manager and other staff members to assist in developing and securing community support for Cinema/Chicago events and the Chicago International Film Festival, October 16-29, 2008.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Marketing Manager in preparing marketing and press materials for distribution.
  • Help to ensure that information on Cinema/Chicago's upcoming events and the Festival is available to all community centers, cultural institutions, consulates as well as all ethnic media around the city.
  • Help to create the most effective presentation of Festival materials and opportunities for potential involvement of other cultural groups and organizations.
  • Assist in arranging functions/events for the Festival that involve cultural groups and organizations.
  • Update and maintain community, cultural and media outreach lists.
  • Work with Festival Programmers to promote Festival films.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Must have some coursework in marketing and special event planning.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good writing and communication skills

Short & Documentary Programming / Awards Preparation
The Chicago International Film Festival
Unpaid Internship. Flexible hours at least 20 hours a week for Chicago International Film Festival, a nonprofit cultural organization. June-October 2008.

Content:
This internship is designed to give intern experience in the short & documentary film programming portion of festival preparation and provide support for festival staff. Intern works directly with Festival programmer in preparation for and during the 44th Annual Chicago International Film Festival, October 16-29, 2008.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with festival staff to secure 35mm prints of short films and documentaries for Film Festival – arrange for shipping of prints
  • Track and organize short film entries to Film Festival on computer.
  • Organize and alphabetize entry forms.
  • Work with juries – organize screenings.
  • Develop, organize, print and mail letters to festival entrants.
  • Process orders for duplicate awards and track orders via computer.
  • Ship festival entries to be returned and recycled.
  • Develop letters for competition entrants.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Interest and some coursework in film history/cinema studies.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good writing and communication skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to use Microsoft Access, Word, and Quark Xpress software comfortably or willingness to learn.

Writing & Editing
The Chicago International Film Festival
Unpaid Internship. Flexible hours at least 20 hours a week for Chicago International Film Festival, a nonprofit cultural organization. Summer 2007, Fall 2007.

Content:
This internship is designed to give intern experience in writing and editing film descriptions for the Annual Chicago International Film Festival program book and schedule. Intern would work directly with graphic artist and head writer to create both a schedule (promotional writing), program book (magazine-style descriptions), event invitations and speeches in an exciting festival environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist graphic artist and head writer with creation of festival materials. Including: schedule, program book, invitations, and speeches.
  • Work with festival staff to create best depiction of the festival.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Good writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to use both PC’s and Macintosh computers or willingness to learn.
  • Foreign language ability desirable.
  • Some familiarity with the Chicago International Film Festival desirable.

Outreach Internship
Unpaid Internship. Flexible hours at 2 to 3 days per week.

Content:
The Outreach Intern will assist the Director of Cinema/Chicago’s Outreach Program in all respects. The Education Program and the Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students are the two major components of Outreach. These programs have been developed to further our community’s understanding and appreciation of independent cinema from around the world.

Responsibilities:
  • Planning monthly meetings of Educational Advisory Committee and writing detailed meeting notes;
  • Updating database of Chicago-area educators;
  • Coordinating summer screening for deaf and hard of hearing high school students;
  • Securing film screening rights and confirming speakers;
  • Assisting in the development of film study guides and lesson plans;
  • Organizing mass mailings;
  • Coordinating specifics for events - buses, screening rooms, equipment, etc.;
  • Going over field trip details with teachers;
  • Assisting Education Program Administrator with all aspects of the program.
Qualifications:
  • Interest in media education and preferred familiarity with Chicago Public School system;
  • Background in education or film/media studies;
  • Must be extremely detail-oriented, hard-working and organized;
  • Good communication skills – should be able to work in a very fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access and Excel;
  • Candidates able to work 20-40 hours a week during Chicago International Film Festival are desirable.
