Nonstop for 44 years! We carry on the tradition because of our belief in film’s power, fusing the wonderful combination of entertainment and enlightenment. The movies not only engross, they also illuminate. They present the extraordinary stories that spring from the minds of individuals and that unite us as humans. They take us to faraway places and show us what is happening just beyond our front doors.
The excitement of discovering a bold new film or a passionate young director can be topped only by the satisfaction of sharing it with an eager audience. This Festival brims with energy—from the innovative and inspiring work of first-time filmmakers and established masters to the enthusiastic responses of our audiences. That was our vision when we started, and that is our vision today.
At the 43rd Chicago International Film Festival last year, dedicated to distinguished film critic Roger Ebert, we presented over 150 films, including feature dramatic films, documentaries, and live action and animated short films from over 44 countries. Many of these films participated in competitive sections where the highest honor is the Gold Hugo—a standard of excellence in the world of film and film festivals and a true symbol of discovery.
We annually present the latest and best in world cinema. Filmmakers, actors, and other film professionals who joined us at the 43rd Festival include: Anthony Hopkins, Jirí Menzel, Marc Forster, Malcolm McDowell, Laura Linney, Tamara Jenkins, Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def, Istán Szabó, Ben and Casey Affleck, John Sayles, Denys Arcand and Alison Eastwood.
