For our 43rd edition, October 4-17, 2007, the Chicago International Film Festival continues its tradition of leading audiences to discover great cinema. As the premiere film and cultural event of the Midwest, the Festival unites film lovers and filmmakers from around the world for two weeks in October with the belief that movies can involve an audience by challenging, entertaining, and inspiring them. In order to produce such an event, the Festival annually hires a group of dedicated individuals to work both in the offices of Cinema/Chicago and in off-site locations during the months of August through October.

Basic requirements:
  • detail-oriented hard-workers with strong organizational skills;
  • the ability to learn quickly;
  • the ability to work in a very fast-paced environment;
  • knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.
Lastly, these seasonal positions usually entail long hours, and employees are expected to devote as much time as necessary to complete their tasks.

2007 Seasonal Job Titles and Brief Job Descriptions:

ADMINISTRATION
Volunteer Coordinator:
Working with the Operations manager to update volunteer database and availabiilty, work with various Festival departments to supply appropriate volunteers to work as needed during the Festival. Second half of September through the end of the Festival.
Special Events Coordinator:
Working with the operations and media relations departments in executing all of the special events presented by the Film Festival. The special events coordinator is responsible for executing all of the logistics of each event, (working with venues, ordering catering, props, ambiance, signage, etc.) Second half of September through the end of the Festival.

PROGRAMMING DEPARTMENT
Entry and Awards Associate:
Duties include assisting Entry and Awards Director with processing of Festival entries and organizing the shorts and documentaries program for the Festival. During the Festival only.
Print Traffic Assistant:
Working under Print Traffic Coordinator, duties will include researching/organizing print availability and overseeing shipping of film prints for Festival - both inbound and outbound. Also responsible for ensuring prints' timely arrival in theaters for screenings during the Festival. Detail-oriented, good organization and communication skills required. Entails frequently long and late hours, and some weekend hours. Mid-August through the end of Festival.

GUEST SERVICES
Hospitality Manager:
Duties include registering all Festival guests upon their arrivals, ensuring their attendance of their screenings/Festival events, working with the Transportation Manager for all guests' ground transportation needs, preparing on a daily basis during the Festival "guests in town" list and, most important of all, making sure the guests enjoy their stay in Chicago and their entire visit of the Festival. Foreign language skills desireable. Last week of September through the end of the festival.
Transportation Manager:
Duties include managing the schedule of airport pick-ups and drop-offs for all festival guests, overseeing the drivers' schedules, and attending to guests' local transportation requirements. Must have familiarity with the downtown locations and traffic conditions. Good driving skills, detail orientated, polite with professional manner. Last week of September through the end of the Festival.
Jury Coordinators:
Duties include attending to the main Jury, acting as a local escort to the Jury members. Good driving skills and familiarity with the city of Chicago are required. During the Festival only.

PUBLICATIONS

PUBLICITY
Assistant to Media Relations
Responsible for assisting in all public relations matters, including the management of the press office, follow-up on press inquiries, distribution of information to press and guests, assist in arranging functions/events for the Festival, and assist in day-to-day operation of press office. September through the end of the Festival.

MARKETING
Marketing Coordinator:
Responsible for all marketing activity, including ad placement, coordinating with any tie-in marketing operations with other parties, liasing between publicity and sponsorship department, developing new ways of promoting and executing film festival, building and executing tracking systems to enhance future audience development, and reaching out to new audiences, etc. Previous experience preferred. Evening and weekend hours may be required. August through the end of the Festival.

TICKET SERVICES
Ticketing/Box Office Manager:
Responsible for managing entire ticketing system designed for the Film Festival which includes overseeing telephone sales, mail orders and automated ticketing system; sales at box offices and at any off-site outlets; managing the scheduling of all ticketing staff; liaise between Ticketmaster and film schedules programming; troubleshooting during the festival. Knowledge of Ticketmaster system is preferred but not required. Past experiences at theater/cinema box offices are essential. Must be extremely well-organized. Flexible schedule, evening and weekend hours required. August through the end of the Festival.
Ticketing Associates:
Working under the supervision of the Ticketing/Box Office Manager to sell tickets for the Festival. Knowledge of automated ticketing systems is preferred but not necessary. In-house training will be provided. Good customer service skills and ability to balance accounts and prepare deposits required. Location will vary amongst Festival office, box office(s), and off-site store locations. Flexible schedule, evening and weekend hours required.
Hotline/Phone Sales Supervisor:
Working with Ticketing/Box Office Manager to manage the Festival ticket sales through telephones, mail orders, and automated ticketing system. Requires good administrative skills. Must schedule employee hours, supply ticketing reports and time sheets, and oversee ticket fulfillment and disbursement. Mid-August through the end of Festival. Some weekend hours required.
Hotline Sales Agent(s):
Working under the Hotline Supervisor to process telephone and mail order sales of Festival ticketing through the TicketMaster system (training will be
provided), and answer informational inquiries. Must be polite, have good communication skills and professional phone manners. Mid-August through the end of the Festival.
Festival Store Manager(s):
Duties include setting up/decorating the Festival stores, managing sales of Festival products (T-shirts, hats, posters, etc.) from the Festival store(s), as well as processing ticket sales (mostly for advance passes). Retail experience is preferred but not necessary. Politeness, professional appearance, and good customer service skills required. Some weekend hours are required. Early September through the end of Festival.
Festival Store Assistant(s):
Duties include assisting Festival Store Managers with the sale of merchandise and tickets. Early September through the end of Festival. Long and weekend hours are required.

THEATER - GUEST SERVICES
Theatre Manager(s):
Duties include managing of all Theater Assistants, controlling crowd traffic, admitting audiences, announcing/introducing each film, sometimes monitoring the post screening Q/As, and coordinating the last-minute rush tickets sales with the Ticketing/Box Office Manager, liaison with the theater projectionists during screening interruptions if occurred. Long hours and weekend hours are required. Early October through the end of the Festival.
Theatre Assistant(s):
Duties include working under the direction of the Theater Manager to achieve his or her responsibilities. Early October through the end of the Festival.
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
Outreach Coordinator:
Works under the Outreach Program Administrator. Outreach Coordinator duties include organizing student screenings: corresponding with educators and program participants, arranging buses, follow-up with venue management, coordinating volunteers; coordinating advisory board meetings: invite participants, create agenda, order food, take detailed meeting notes, clean up, editing and emailing notes to participants; on-site screening management: direct volunteers, greet buses of students, seat students, organize; screen potential films for the program. Skills required includes ability to work independently, excellent skills in writing and communication (especially public speaking skills), detail-oriented, able to handle numerous tasks at one time, work well under pressure and with large groups of people, Bachelor's degree required, previous experience in media education or community organizing preferred, familiarity with film and language skills a plus, reference and writing samples required.
