Juliette Binoche stars in adored director Hou Hsiao-hsien’s (The Puppetmaster) first French-language feature, inspired by Albert Lamorisse’s 1956 classic The Red Balloon. A mysterious red balloon affectionately floats alongside Suzanne—an emotionally unsteady, workaholic puppeteer—and her somewhat neglected seven-year-old son, Simon, as their story unfolds. Completely absorbed in her new show, Suzanne becomes overwhelmed by the complications of modern life and decides to hire a Taiwanese film student to handle the care of her son.
