One of the most prolific and influential elements of the lives of millions, television has become a fixture of the American experience. Now in its 45th anniversary, the Hugo Television Awards have honored the important events, beloved personalities, and inspiring ideas that have shaped the unforgettable moments of television. Every year the most innovative members of the television industry submit their work to the Hugo Television Awards to be recognized as a leader in the field. Now is the time to be recognized for your part in influencing the ever-advancing field of television.
This year’s 2009 Hugo Television Awards will continue to raise the standard of quality in all aspects of the medium. With new and exciting approaches continually influencing television programming and commercials alike, the Hugo Television Awards pay tribute to those who push the envelope and display mastery of their craft. And, only the most entertaining and informative work is awarded our top prize, the Gold Hugo.
At our Hugo Awards evening, we will honor the winners of this year’s competition as well as present Career Achievement Awards to two of the best- one in each of the fields of TV commercial work and in television productions. We can’t wait to receive your submissions, and welcome you to Chicago for this exciting annual event.

2008 Commitment to Excellence Award Recipients:
KARTEMQUIN FILMS, Television Productions honoree
For over 40 years, Kartemquin Films has been making documentaries that
examine and critique society through the stories of real people.
Kartemquin's first film in 1966, Home For Life-- a powerful chronicle of two
elderly people entering a home for the aged, established the direction the
organization would take over the next four decades. With a record number of
films currently in development and production, Kartemquin is poised to
continue this legacy for years to come. Additionally, Kartemquin was
recently honored to receive one of eight international 2007 MacArthur Awards
for Creative and Effective Institutions. Our films have been broadcast
nationally (on PBS, NBC, Cinemax, IFC, The Sundance Channel, The Learning
Channel and other outlets), continue to be distributed both nationally and
internationally, and include ambitious outreach and education campaigns.
SMUGGLER, Television Commercials honoree
Founded in 2002 by Patrick Milling Smith and Brian Carmody, Smuggler has quickly become one of the most sought-after production companies worldwide. Early on, the company earned accolades as "Breakout Bandit (2002) and "Production Company of the Year" (2003) by Board magazine. In 2005, Creativity magazine named Smuggler the "Production Company of the Year." Consistently listed among the top three in industry rankings, Smuggler was once again recognized in 2007 as the “Production Company of the Year” by Boards and Creativity magazine, which cited Smuggler’s acute ability to “extend the company’s reach while simultaneously reinforcing its considerable quality control.” Smuggler was yet again named production company of the year by Creativity to kick off 2008. Last year Smuggler also took home the coveted Palme D’Or award at the Cannes festival, honoring the most awarded company of the elite competition.
